 "tomato strainer" 2009-09-22
By Robert V. Malloy (Coalcrak,PA)
Excellent product,works well.Very efficient.Only criticism is

clamping mechanism that's supposed to secure it to your kitchen

counter or table- its too short to clamp properly;so the unit is

top-heavy and unstable while turning crank and adding tomatoes.

Just a little awkward to use.

 "great item!" 2009-09-15
By E. Benzie (New Mexico)
My wife and I recently purchased a "back to basics" food strainer and sauce maker. In years past, it had been a real pain to prepare the tomatoes into a sauce. (We grow our own and have had abundant quantities.) This year it took less than a third of the time and a lot less mess. Although nothing in this world is perfect, this item comes close. The only complaint I have is this: after using the strainer, it is close to impossible to remove the hopper base from the main body. I have oiled each piece befrorehand and it still is stuck on there. Any suggestions? Other than that, this is a great invention!

"Helpful tool but will it be durable?" 2009-09-12
By Melanie Williams
My first Back to Basics Food Strainer arrived damaged. The product box was sorely lacking in padding material and the metal handle had shattered the white plastic squirt guard. This was an issue with the product packaging and not Amazon's packaging. Amazon immediately sent a replacement and the replacement was in perfect shape (despite the lousy packaging material again).

The strainer works like a charm. My tomato harvest is at 140 pounds now and still going strong, so the strainer has been getting a lot of use. It definitely has been saving me tons of time.

My only concern is with the durability of the product. I don't like all of the plastic parts, particularly the thin and seemingly brittle clear plastic spout, which has to be SNAPPED onto the screen. Let me guess which will be the first part to go! Also, the shaft is not stainless steel and tends to get rust spots if not fastidiously dried.

When I searched for tomato strainers it seemed like they all had the same issues (cheap plastic parts) so this model is really no better or worse than the others. Just wish SOMEONE would build these things for durability.

"fantastic for the canning enthusiast" 2009-09-07
By Heather N. Davis (Coburg, Oregon United States)
I have had this product for about 10 years now...I forget about it until it is canning time, and then I can't be happier that I have it. It works AWESOME. Applesauce, no problem, just quarter your apples and steam them, drop them in the hopper, and with a few turns of the handle you have applesauce. No peeling, coring, nothing...so easy. I made tomatoe sauce and ketchup this year. The processing time was minimal. Again, no seeding or peeling. This is a fabulous product and has held up over the years.

 "TERRIFIC FOR TOMATOES" 2009-08-13
By T. Pyatt (St. Louis)
This is perfect for tomato sauce. I zipped through 25 pounds in about 15 minutes. It is especially effective with Roma type sauce tomatoes. They are just the right size and only require washing before processing.

The unit is well designed and solidly built. It's easy to assemble and we are excited to try it on Concord grapes for jelly.

As another reviewer has mentioned, keep the box for storage so you can keep all the parts together.
