this is actually a really good item. Ive had it for about 6 months, it's quiet, and my two cats love it. it took them a little while to get used to it (without getting their heads wet) but it was very funny to watch. I clean it and fill it with water once a week and change the filter about once a month. if you drink fresh filtered water then why shouldnt your cats?

The Drinkwell Platinum system works exactly the way it's supposed to work.
The design circulates the water, which keeps it somewhat fresher and encourages your cat to drink more. Our cat used to drink a little out of his water dish, but he loved drinking out of the bathroom faucet. Since we got the Drinkwell, he drinks only out of it.
This is a well-engineered, sturdily-built product. Once you assemble it, it will just keep on working as it's supposed to, and your cat will benefit from having a cleaner water supply. There are, however, two potential downsides, one significant and one minor.
Most significantly, you absolutely need to clean the system regularly. Depending on the temperature, the amount of bacteria, fungus spores, etc., in circulation in the air, and the amount of food your cat drops into the fountain, you might get a week between cleanings. But you might get just three or four days. Cats love this fountain, but not when the water gets slimy!
Cleaning requires disassembly, but I can do it about 15 minutes. It's not hard to do, but it needs to be done thoroughly. You'll be happier if you buy the accessory cleaning brush kit. There are a couple of places that you just can't get to without those or similar brushes.
Less significantly, the filters are quite expensive. You have to replace the filter every third cleaning or so; again, the replacement frequency depends on how much gunk goes into the water. Pet stores seem to be the most expensive places to buy the filters, but I've seen them on sale at Target, and Amazon has the most reasonable regular prices. It really doesn't matter, though; you just have to gulp and pay for them.
One bit of advice: Don't buy the accessory grass-growing tray. This looks like a great idea; you clip a little tray onto the rim of the fountain, and grass grows for your cat to snack on. The reality is that the grass falls into the water and gunks things up. It also seemed to speed up the formation of slime. Our cat and we are happier without it, so save your money.
Over all, I'm very happy with the Drinkwell system. Our cat loves it, and he drinks more water than he did before. You have to be willing to clean it regularly, and you have to accept the price of the filters. I'm satisfied that I got a good value for the money and time, and I'd buy it again if I had the choice.

This product works as claimed. I find that it encourages my cats to drink more water more often. This is good because cats don't drink enough water. I am very satisfied with this product.

My previous filter was made by this company and lasted years with 2 cats at it. This is larger (probably larger than I need but hard to tell from description) but works beautifully.
