Simply hold BOLT in your hand or place it on a flat surface, turn it on and watch your cat pounce, chase, and bat at the exciting laser patterns. Recently fostered an absolute passion in my cat Penny for the laser pointer. She used to cry for treats when I walked toward the kitchen; now she hangs "out on the track" (aka "living room") demanding to chase the little red dot. I bought the FroliCat BOLT so she could play when I was unavailable and she loves it. As other reviewers have said, the BOLT does make a repetitive circular pattern. Penny is young and likes to RUN, so she is somewhat limited and doesn't seem as excited as when I play with her and the handheld laser. Which brings me to the guilt... each time I turn on the BOLT I feel I've done the equivalent of plopping a toddler in front of the TV to keep her entertained, missing an opportunity to bond and interact with my pet. So I try to alternate between automatic and handheld so her "workout" always gets a changeup and I don't feel so ashamed. More interesting, varied patterns and a quieter motor would have upped my review to 5 stars. Overall a great product but shouldn't be the sole source of play for the kitty!

Somehow, we now have four cats in our house (and two outside who probably think we're part of their servant staff). Three of them love to chase the light from a laser pointer. We assumed that the three would also play with the light from the Bolt. As usual, with cats, our assumptions went awry. All four cats will lie down and watch the Bolt's light dance around the room but not one will make a move to chase the laser. They seem happy and interested, but they will only get up to chase the handheld laser.
So buying the Bolt to exercise our cats was a bust, but they do seem entertained. Odd.

This is the best cat toy yet, and well worth the investment.

My cats absolutely love chasing the red dot around the floor and on the wall! One of them thinks the dot goes underneath her and launches straight up in the air like a helicopter. It's the greatest exercise for your indoor cat, and if you want to be a couch potato, just set it on the counter and off it goes for 15 minutes of cat fun.

Avoid. First, this seems like a great concept, but in practice it works so-so at best. In my experience, our cat got in the way of the laser and thus could not see the dot. When using a laser pointer you automatically compensate by moving the light. Frolicat has no idea whether the dot is on the floor or on the back of your cat.... The angle of mirror cannot be adjusted to point down at an angle from a table--so you need a very large space. I thought there was some kind of programmable mode--there is not. You turn it on and it runs for 15 minutes. That's it.

My cat has an obsessive love for the laser beam, so this toy is great! It moves all around the room and switches directions several times at 15 min intervals. So all I have to do it hit the button every 15 minutes. It's amazing!
