Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big, self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litter pleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the box before the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. The litter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 inches high, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of the same size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. Instructions for acclimating a cat to the box are included. --Fred Brack

 "Love it!" 2009-09-03

I've had a LitterMaid before, but not with the ramp. My last one lasted for approximately 5 years before the motor died. You can't beat the odor control and the ease of clean up. The ramp is a bonus because the litter is left on the ramp and not on your carpet. Would definitely purchase this item again.

 "Expensive disappointment" 2009-08-30

The first thing I noticed when our (2)cats began using the LitterMaid was the odor. We didn't have litter box odor before but when the mechanical box scooped the litter into the small receptacle, the odor became intense. Then there was the extra time we spent keeping the LitterMaid clean, and all the loose litter that ended up underneath the trap area. We began spending money on extra mats, canvas, screens, anything that would make the LitterMaid more private and cleaner. We realized we were spending excessive money to make this litter box work for us, and unusual amounts of time cleaning up the mess the litter box was making instead of simply cleaning up after our cats, which wasn't nearly as difficult or time consuming. We just bought a new box called Clevercat which we are very pleased with.

I am very happy with my purchase. It misses clumps every now and then and some gets stuck on the rakes, but it sure beats scooping.

 "Great product!" 2009-08-26

After reading many reviews I decided to give this product a try with an open mind. So far I love the littermaid despite a few design flaws. First I would like to say what I like about it. It is nice not haveing to scoop poop every day. Twice a week I empty the container and in less then 2 minutes I am done. As suggested I am reusing the containers until they wear out. It also does keep odor down and the cats love to watch it work.

I don't like that sometimes litter gets caught behind the teeth and it just runs and runs until you fix the problem, but I have also been able fix that by filling it with less litter. There is a gap between the collection tray and the litter tub that leads to litter getting on the carpet so I end up moving and vaccuuming under it at least onece a week.

In conclusion the litter maid was worth the $90 I spent on it and does require less attention than a traditional litter box. It takes a week to figure out it's quirks, because yes it is a machine and machines aren't as perfect as we would like them to be.
