Ok so I have not been using the unit that these go with for too long, just got it today. But just based on my feeling of the product, I highly doubt that they are very effective in actually filtering anything other than lint or other large debris. Its a loose felt material on the outside. The inside of it feels to be some stiff plastic or thin metal of some sort to hold the shape, with some pieces of carbon or charcoal in there. There are not a lot of actual carbon or charcoal chunks like you would see in a brita filter, and they do not do anything but sit at the bottom of the "filter" so I honestly dont see how they could do anything. We have a brita filter on our sink, so when I fill the unit, I use that and will use the rest of the 4 filters I got for the unit, but do not believe I will be purchasing more.

I use the petmate freshflow fountain for my bunnies. I have two. They loooooooooooove the fountain and drink often because it oxygenates the water and it's not stale or stagnant. :)
Filters last about 90 days for me.
I clean my petmate fountain once every week for the sake of cleanliness and prevention of hard water on the sides as well as slime.
My bunnies don't drool like dogs do, so maybe that'a a factor that my fountain is cleaner and the filter last 90 days.

I have used these filters and never had the charcoal clump in 9yrs! Did you rinse the charcoal filter under cold water before using? This removes dust. I understand about the size of the charcoal, it is big but if you do not use this filter your pump will clog up and it is exspensive to replace. I had one pump wear out due to letting it run with no water accidently. I do change my filter more often but it is worth it to keep the water clean and protect the pump. I filter my water before I put it in the fountain so I am not worried about the quality of the filter. I replace the filter at least once a month.
Also it is very important to clean the whole fountain once a wk including pump, read instructions, it seems hard at first but not after you do it once. I cannot tell you how much my 3 cats love this and they are picky Siamese. They are 15yrs old and no one can believe how healthy and young they look/are! Perfect kidney health ect. this product is worth it;s weight in gold, the fountain that is and the filters ARE neccessary to keep it functioning. I keep it close to my fridge so I hear it if it gets low, i don't use the resevior i just pour the water straight into the bowl part.

These filters really only will work to help filter out lint and other light debris that might fall into the water bowl. The enormous size of the charcoal bits is ridiculous for true water filtration because each piece is so huge. There are only so many 'sites' on the bits to adsorb water impurities. Not only that, but there are hardly any pieces in it to begin with. Charcoal filters work best when the pieces are tiny and packed together and the overall surface area is significantly increased. If you look at any Brita or PUR pitcher filter and see the tiny activated charcoal pieces, you can clearly tell the difference. DON'T BUY THEM--Wast of your hard earned money for a gimic.

I could not find these water filters in any store so I went to the internet. I found just what I was looking for and purchased more than I intended to due to the great price. I received them quickly and they fit perfectly. I will reorder these again when I need more.
