The cost of these replacement trays would be the one and only reason every household with a cat wouldn't purchase the automatic litter box. The box is great but the tray cost is just way out of line for what it is. They should re-evaluate their pricing on the replacement trays in order to promote this great litter box!

I have two cats. They took to this style of litter right away. So I was pleased at first. Then I quickly realized these trays were not going to last as long as stated. I get 7 days, TOPS, out of one of these. By the end of 7 days, the cardboard liner is soaked, and the box smells VERY bad.
After my local pet store ran out of refills (they said there was a production issue and were out for 2 MONTHS!!!), I switched to the Forever Litter Tray.
I would suggest buying the Forever Litter Tray that is sold here on Amazon. It is pretty much the same thing, but much cheaper in the long run. It is made of plastic, so you can empty it, hose it off, and refill it. Not only will this save me $100's per year, it is better for the environment.

I absolutely LOVE my ScoopFree litter box!! One of the best inventions ever! Less mess, less work & less dust!! I have 2 of them & have had them for over a year now & no issues except for 1 kinda big one - the refill cartidges
The refill cartridges last 1 month & are slightly costly ($[...] each)especially if you have multiple cats. But about 2 months ago the refill cartridges disappeared from local pet store shelves. We were told there was a back log & distribution issue & they should be on store shelves by the 1st week in August. It never happened. I just bought the last 2 refill cartridges at the Meier by me 2 days ago. When I contacted ScoopFree today about their distribution issue over the past couple months they called me & informed me that Petsmart refused to place any orders with them the past 4 weeks & it was just decided this week (By Petsmart) that they will no longer carry ScoopFree's refill cartridges on their shelves. Their product is available at Meier, Petco or Pet Supplies Plus (which are more expensive) or I could subscribe to their delivery service & have packs of 3 or 6 delivered at a time with free shipping. I had already found my alternative!! FOREVER LITTER TRAYS!! Which are sold here on Amazon.com! [...] In the long run these will save you a ton of money & they are getting excellent reviews! I recommend using Target brand crystal litter as a refill filler option.
I'm using litter box liners to line my ScoopFree refill cartridge & make them last until I can get my Forever Trays! Then I'll write another review for those!

This self cleaning litter box is a great product for several reasons. First and foremost is the ability to remove and dispose of the liner tray. It is great that they made it out of coated cardboard. Second is the waste is stored in a compartment that makes it easier to put the tray in a garbage bag without the risk of spilling said waste everywhere. Last is the relative simplicity of the mechanism that rakes the litter.
That said the rake doesn't quite get to the bottom of the tray so the urine leaves a spot of damp litter that smells like.. well urine, and it also gets litter crystals in the track and sounds like a tiny ship dragging on a tiny ice burg. This is not an issue if you don't want to get a month out of the litter. If you do want to get a month out of it, you must use a scooper to sift and turn the litter to dry out any pooled urine. We have two boxes for our two cats. Yes thats right two boxes, multiple cats require multiple boxes for any of you would be cat owners. We only have two cats but one of them is a large breed that gets up to 20+lbs and he expects his litter box clean and will tell you so after using it. The new model has a timer setting which solves my being forced to get up and push the run button to satisfy the demanding kitty. With two boxes and moderate sifting effort every day they last an average of 5 weeks before the demanding one starts choosing other options and locations to do his business. Don't expect this box to eliminate daily effort or you will be frustrated. Expect diminished daily effort and happier/healthier cats.

We have two cats. The compartment for solid waste collection is barely large enough to collect solid waste for ten days for the two. Because of this the lid on the storage compartment does not close down when getting full and odor becomes obvious. In additioon I was horrified by the amount of mold/fungus that was growing on the waste - can't be healthy. Because of these issues and the need to replace cartridges frequntly the cost is going to be high!
Suggestion - Increase the depth of the box to allow more solid waste to be stored. However, this may require increasing the height of the rake. ??????????
